What is it about this film that has made it so durable as a film, and what is it about the zombie that has made it such an important monster in American popular culture?

George A. Romeros Night of the Living Dead features the first representation of the modern zombie, and it has spawned numerous other films, as well as other kinds of cultural representations (zombies are depicted everywhere from cinema to comics to real-life “zombie walks” in which people get dressed up as zombies and wander cities together in surreal parades). My assignment is to make an argument about why Romero’s film seems to have been so influential in the creation of this modern monster, the zombie.
