This is the term paper for this course. it involves a cumulative analysis of an orally transmitted story or a review of a cultural norm.. You can use the materials you accumulated each week, in the regular assignments, to address prompt A or prompt B. Each requires an APA paper of approximately 500 words. Make sure to enter “A” or “B” before your title. A. Choose one extant culture, and explain how its folklore elements (the orally transmitted history, stories, song, dance) keep it alive and give its members an indentity and meaning. This excludes all extinct cultural traditions since they have no current or evolving folklore (so no Hittites or Romans). It must be a group that exists today that has a specific idenitity, even if that identity is changing (as it most certainly is). It can be a big, or small group. You could choose ” Latinos” or, more narrowly, “Cubans” or “Mexican Americans”, or more narrowly, “Oaxacan Americans”. Or you can choose all American Indians, or just Apache, or just Luiseno etc, or Polynesians, or, more narrowly, Tahitians…. It can be any group in any country where you can find sufficent data. Craft a coherent review of the folk elements of this group. Including… 1. Who the group is 2. The stories (myth) of the group 3. Any dance, music, language, ritual, dress, body modification, cosmetics, specific to that culture. 4. how its folk attributes and elements set it apart, and how they help it thrive. Please include a bibliography for all sources used. or B. Choose any element of folklore that we reviwed (bady art, stories, dance, music etc) and compare that from one culture to that from another. For example Cuban dance with Irish dance, or Mexican Indian (Mayan) dress with Senegalese dress. Explain the function of that item of folklore in each culture. Compare and contrast them.. You must choose two groups that have this item (for example you cannot compare Mexican Music to Amish Music as the Amish eschew music). You must choose two groups that exists today that have specific identities, even if those identities are changing (as they most certainly are). These can be big or small groups, though you will find similar sized groups are easier to compare. You could choose ” Latinos” and “Africans” or, more narrowly, “Cubans” and “Malians” etc. You can choose any two groups in any country, or any two or more countries, where you can find sufficient data. Craft a coherent review of the same folk element in each group.
